Because I spent my day shaking, and I know a number of people who are having crappy and/or difficult starts to January:

FIFTEEN MINUTE FESTIVAL

This is something that nextian originated and that pushingmetaphor and deutscheami have also run in those times when it seems like half your f-list could really use a smile. I turn to Emma for the explanation of what exactly this is:

For 24 48 hours, in the comments, post any request(s) you'd like that can be carried out in fifteen minutes or less by somebody on the intarwebs. Answers to questions, drabble prompts, drawble prompts, icon requests, a comment's worth of sympathy, anything you can come up with is fair game. Anyone can make as many requests as they like; anyone can fill them. At the end of the 24 48 hours, I'll personally fill any request left uncompleted, but it would be awesome if other people helped out too.

Pimp this far and wide; the offer stands for the whole internet. Anonymous commenting is on.

(P.S. - If you're not getting the general idea yet, this was the original Fifteen Minute Festival. It's really, really lovely.)

Could someone maybe convince me that I'm not going to fail this project (background: huge, semester-spanning project specific to my school) despite the fact that one of my advisers is a pompous asshole, all of the good sources are in German, my two partners hate each other, and we only have until the end of February to get it done?

Darling: you are not going to fail this project. You have a month right now; that's good! For a minute, I misread 'February' as 'January,' and was like, '...Oh, God, she's screwed.' But, for real: you have time. That can only be a good thing. If your partners hate each other, they hate each other; there's not much you can do about that, unfortunately. All you can do is keep them apart as much as possible; set them separate tasks, maybe? I feel that, no matter what, your awesome is going to cancel out their idiocy.

Group projects are always kind of terrifying, but I adhere to the way of thinking that I always have: teachers do recognize when one group members does more than others. I don't know how, but they always seem to figure it out. It's, like, a magical power or something! You will be fine. You will find better (well, English) sources; you will juggle silly partners; you can deal with your adviser(s) who isn't/aren't pompous assholes. 3. Speaking as someone who works in an on-campus office, I can tell you: no one is there or working over the first part of winter break, and if anyone is there at all, it's a skeleton crew. Give them some time, or if you're really worried about it, give the office a call! Phones or in person are always the best ways to deal with academic bureaucracy. Everyone comes back from the holidays slightly scatter-brained, and that includes your friendly neighborhood campus offices.

4. I went out to the parking lot and discovered that my car was encased in a sheet of snow and ice that's at least three or four inches thick. This makes me happy because I don't actually have anywhere I have to be for days, so I can afford to appreciate the beauty of a perfect, shining ice crust.

1. Well you can always be a published writer if you are willing to do it yourself; you cannot be held responsible for the poor taste of the publishing industry. ;)

2. I assume that Winchester counts as a city, since I'm sure a cathedral affords that status and everything circles around the Cathedral. The high street leads all the way down the hill from the train station - and the great hall, and the round table that hangs on the wall, and the beautifully filigreed black doors - to the statue of Alfred and the Abbey gardens. Further, too, if you follow the curve of the road around to where St Giles hill climbs high enough that you can see the whole city beneath your feet, that you can roll down the grass expanse above the lookout point and see the grass and the flashes of sky.

Winchester used to be capital of half of England, and the richness and the beauty of the buildings lets you know that, but it's the Cathedral that is most important; the grounds hold students and hippies and old people and picnic lunches, and up a hidden stair are the angel gardens, stone benches just waiting for you to lie back on and stare at the clouds in the sky and the gargoyles and the flowers. Inside the Cathedral is Edward Burne-Jones stained glass, and 12th Century wall paintings, and a beautiful sculpture by Antony Gormley.

I've never lived in Winchester, but it has to be home because a little piece of my heart is there.

1) Research places to volunteer in your area for your favorite cause- walk dogs at animal shelters, teach knitting at domestic violence shelters, make chemo caps or preemie blankets, I don't care. Just find out how you can make the world a better place.

2) Donate to Heifer International, the Sierra Club, the ASPCA, Red Cross/Red Crescent, or Pretty Bird Woman House (or local domestic violence shelter of your choice).
