Yuletide letter

Dear Yuletide writer,

OH MAN, YOU'RE THE BEST!!! Yuletide is my favorite time of year and I'm so excited that you are into one of my teeny fandoms; thank you so much for writing a fic for me! Two quick things before I really get my babble going here: I know people sometimes wonder whether holiday-themed stories would be cool with their recipients; they'd be cool with me, if you wanted to go that route! Also cool with me if it's something that comes up: inventing/using original characters as needed!

Things that I love: friendships and family (both blood-related-family and found-family) and people being concerned about & caring for each other, and protecting each other. I'm a sucker for the occasional hurt/comfort. I love nerds, high school narratives, college narratives, competence, humor, and superheroes/spies/spooky supernatural stories. I'm cool with violence and/or sex scenes as long as they work in the context of the story. I tend to prefer stories that mesh well with the general feeling of the source canon; ie: not taking a light-hearted sitcom canon and writing a darkfic of torture and death and maimery. I love humor and warm moments, but if it matches with the canon's feel, I can absolutely go for sadder, darker stuff as well. Go with your own judgment and have fun writing, and I will be absolutely delighted!

Things that I'm usually not into in fiction: incest, explicit rape scenes, infidelity, alternate universe fic (except for Groundhog Day style fics; they are my AU achilles heel), porn without plot.

Now I'm going to talk about request ideas and ramble a bit about what I like about these characters/canons! Please take all of it with many grains of salt; I'm chucking out a bunch of information in the hopes that something in it will be helpful to you, not because I intend it to be a laundry list of stuff that I ~*expect*~ to see in a fic!! I am a windbag when it comes to canons I love. I apologize in advance. Seriously, I am a chronic over-talker, so if you're someone who prefers to work with less outside detail, you can definitely stop reading this letter here!

Gravity Falls
Mabel Pines, Wendy Corduroy
Optional details: I love this show so much that it's really hard for me to think of much -- aside from incest (not my thing!) -- that you could do that wouldn't make me kick my feet with glee and shriek like a banshee! (Are there banshees in Gravity Falls??) That's probably not very helpful for optional details, though, so I'll just say that I'd love to see Mabel and Wendy doing something that isn't focused on Dipper, whether that's having a chat on the Mystery Shack roof or going on an adventure (supernatural or otherwise) together. I also love Dipper and Grunkle Stan and Soos and just about everyone else who you could possibly want to include, so I'm easy!

Mabel Pines is my soul of souls (if I started writing about why I adore Mabel we would be here all year, but all that zany ruthless optimism and zest for life is so great, and I'm so delighted that she's girly and boy-crazy and silly and fierce when need be, and these are all portrayed as awesome things to be because that's who she is!), but I love everyone on this show and would be so, so pleased with anything that you chose to do or anyone you wanted to include. I also checked off Wendy because (A) Wendy's awesome, and (B) I really, really enjoy the handful of interactions we've seen her have with Mabel. I'd love to learn more about Wendy in general, since she's SO GREAT but I feel like we usually see her more as Dipper's crush than in contexts that are about her being a character in her own right. (If you want to write about Dipper's crush, please don't be scared away; I love Dipper and I'm thoroughly entertained by the crush!!)

I selected Mabel and Wendy for the reasons mentioned above, but, as I said, I'd be thoroughly delighted with anyone that you want to include. I love Mabel and Dipper's supportive-and-loving-but-believably-fighty-at-times relationship; I love Grunkle Stan's gruff cynicism and super dubious guardian skills (and also HOW MUCH he loves those kids. that and fleecing rubes); I love that Soos inexplicably calls Mabel "Hambone"; I love that Mabel found Her People in a girl with a lizard and a girl with fork-fingers, and her friendship with them; I LOVE WADDLES; I love the show's mythology and the mystery and the world-building (the monsters legit terrify me at times) and the recurring townspeople and the setting and the humor and the heart.

Any direction that you want to go in would be awesome. Adventures, supernatural or more mundane? Delving into the show's big mystery arc, or the characters chilling at the arcade? Chatting at the Mystery Shack or finding the mer-people? Wendy giving Mabel advice of some kind? The two of them fighting off a return of the gnomes? A look at future summers in Gravity Falls?? For serious, I'd be in love with anything you did here.

Static Shock
Virgil "Static" Hawkins, Richie "Gear" Foley
Optional details: I loved that Virgil and Richie always had each others' backs, even when they were fighting (I double-loved that they fought sometimes, and that when they did, they did it in all the terrible ways that I totally fought with friends when I was 15 and still learning to be chill), and loved the way that they act as checks/balances for each other, both of them ready to tell the other one when he's being a jerk or making a bad decision. I loved how freaking dorky they are and how much fun they have together. Anything you did with their friendship would be so awesome, whether you wanted to touch on superhero stuff or not! I'm just as interested in their bro-fistbumps and attempts to pass English class as I am in their hijinks as Static and Gear.

I love so many things about this show -- the fact that Static was a young black superhero with a rad family; the job that the creative team did of balancing the superhero material with the regular-teenage-life stuff; the fact that, even if it was clunkily handled at times, they took on a whole lot more serious topics than I tend to expect kids' cartoons to touch (racism, gangs, religion, gun violence, death, learning disabilities, homelessness); the diversity of the supporting cast; HOW GREAT EVERYONE WAS... I could go on for days!

Virgil and Richie's friendship, and how close they were and how much they cared about each other, really stood out to me. I'd be super interested in anything you wanted to do that revolved around them! First becoming friends when they were younger? The immediate future post-series (I always wonder what the creative team would have done with another season, given the Ebon-Hotstreak fused villain and the fact that so many of Static's rogues' gallery are now de-powered)? A further-on future (what do you do about prom, or college and the possibility of moving away from home, when you're teen superheroes protecting an entire city?)? A regular Friday night, juggling Virgil and Richie's social lives with Static and Gear's responsibilities? Seeing them fighting bad guys or hanging out at the community center? Something dealing with and/or lampshading the fact that Richie is knocked unconscious/kidnapped/generally injured hilariously often? For real, anything!

If it's helpful to know my feelings on other characters, I love Virgil's dad and Sharon and his relationship with them and how Richie is basically an honorary Hawkins, and I'm interested in the Foleys' tense family dynamics too. Ship-wise, I don't generally ship Virgil and Richie (or Richie with any character from the show), but their bond is super delightful! I liked Virgil/Daisy (I really loved the girls in general; Daisy, Shenice, and Frieda were all great), and would totally be interested in an exploration of Dwayne McDuffie's comments on Richie's sexuality, if you were inclined to head in that direction! Again, seriously, please ignore this if it's unhelpful; write whatever interests you and will be fun for you, and I'll be delighted to be along for the ride.

(since most of the series was never released on DVD, if it's helpful: source)

Young Avengers
Tommy Shepherd, Billy Kaplan
Optional details: I love found-family and all of the Young Avengers, so if you wanted to write team-fic, I would be super down with that as well! I just selected Tommy and Billy specifically because I feel like, of all of the kids, we know perhaps the least about Tommy, and I find their sibling dynamic interesting! How do you interact with a magical identical twin who you learned about and met for the first time as teenagers?

I ship the everloving hell out of Billy and Teddy and their total nerdiness/devotion to each other (and while I'm talking ships, I also dig Kate/Eli, and am interested in Tommy's crush on Kate, and I love everyone's friendships!!), but thought it'd be neat to request a focus on something different, since the one thing in the fandom that there's a lot of already is fic where the main driver is Billy/Teddy! (But I do adore them. Queer nerdlove: kryptonite to Lexies.)

Chucking some ideas out there -- I'm interested in the full Kaplan family and in what in the hellll that apartment is like, with Billy, Tommy, Teddy, and Billy's little brothers all living there with Billy's (so excellent) parents; I'm interested in Billy and Tommy dealing, in their own ways and possibly together, with the intense shit that seems to keep happening to them (examples: after Civil War, they both have experience with being held in power-dampening prison! yay??; two words: Children's Crusade; that fucked up crossover with Runaways where the writers managed to capture/torture all four queer characters; basically, all the things that always make me wonder if there's there such a thing as therapy for superheroes with secret identities!)...

I love that Billy is so frigging powerful but had to turn to self-help books to learn to control it; I love what a snarky giant fanboy he is, and how hard he tries and how earnest and well-intentioned he is, even while making the worst decisions ever. I love that Tommy tries just as hard to help people (one of my favorite parts in Siege was his struggle as he realized that he wasn't fast enough to save everyone) and he never wants to admit it or wants anyone to know it, and that sometimes he might skate on the edge of good guy/bad guy -- or at least would like people to think he does -- and that he's kind of an asshole, and gleefully so. I love watching the two of them prod at each other and get to know each other.

I always think it'd be cool if the comics showed more of their daily lives, and how those lives mesh with being teen superheroes (one of my favorite things the series has ever done: the Young Avengers spending their spare time chainsawing each others' faces off in some online game). Practicalities that always intrigue me and could make an interesting jumping-off point: do the kids all go to different schools? Does Tommy go to school at all, considering that he blew up his last one? How do they handle keeping secret identities, especially during/after Civil War? I dig narratives about managing public information/opinion, so that issue of Young Avengers that was all about the kids deciding what to tell the media about themselves was like candy to me. I've read widely in Marvel lore and am up-to-date with Hawkeye and the plans for the new Young Avengers title, so you're good to go in whatever direction appeals!

Hellboy (movies)
Liz Sherman
Optional details: I really love Liz Sherman, so, seriously, any fic at all about her would be SO AMAZING, I cannot even. I'm not super into babyfic or pregnancyfic, as a general rule, but if you have strong feelings about it, I could be convinced! And I would be into just about anything else, too -- exploring her life before canon? Case-fic? Fluffy fic? Whatever you come up with would be awesome!

I'm not sure I can textually render how strong my feelings about Elizabeth Sherman are. THEY'RE REALLY STRONG. I just love her, a lot. I love her dry sardonic delivery and the way that you can steadily watch her accept herself and come into her own throughout the course of the first movie. Her competence slays me and so does her sureness in herself (especially in movie #2, both in terms of BPRD agent stuff and in terms of emotional stuff, knowing who she is and what she wants out of life), along with her doubts and her fears too. I love that she is tiny and authoritative and a secret agent and essentially a reluctant superhero and COULD END YOU/EVERYONE. "You should be running" gives me chills every time.

ANYWAY: Liz!! I'm interested in who she is and what her past was like, or in her relationship to her fire and how she can and can't control it, or in those 13 times that she left the Bureau, or in the inner workings of the BPRD and what missions are like (worldbuilding or creepy case-fic could be cool! the Hellboy world leaves a lot of interesting things open, especially in RE: its supernatural aspects), or ... anything you can come up with, really!

If thoughts on other characters would help, I LIKE EVERYONE, especially Hellboy, Abe, Myers, and Professor Bruttenholm. When it comes to her relationship with Hellboy, my feelings are: ♥________♥. I selected only Liz in the character field, though, because she's my heart of hearts favorite and I'd be genuinely delighted with fic that doesn't feature so much as a mention of any of the other characters. Basically, the bottom line here is: write anything at all about Liz and I'll be super happy!!

IN CONCLUSION: I hope this letter and the links to my Tumblr were helpful and not overwhelming, Yuletide writer. Please trust me when I say that I will deeply appreciate and love and kickyfeet with joy over anything that you write for me. Yuletide is a highlight of my year, every year, and just the knowledge that someone has taken the time to craft something especially for me is enough to make my cup runneth over.
