Yuletide letter 2021

Hello! Sorry again about the late letter - this year's Yuletide signups coincided with some Stuff in my life, but I'm here and I'm psyched for my favorite time of year, and I'm very glad you're participating. Especially given how late I'm getting this to you, this is all just extra info if that's helpful for you - please feel free to work with only what I provided in my signup if that's your jam.

Things that I love: Friendships and family (found family and blood-related family alike), teams coming together, romance, domesticity; people being concerned about, caring for, and protecting each other. I'm a sucker for hurt/comfort and people just really liking each other, and companionable/loving squabbling! I love humor, competence, banter, and ridiculous fluffy tropes where appropriate (fake dating/fake married! cuddling for warmth! seasonal or holiday content where appropriate! fic with epistolary elements or that makes use of social media! ok those last few aren't tropes, but I appreciate them anyway). I realize this is a lot of fluffy stuff but I also really dig action and drama! I'm usually not a porn without plot person, but I'm absolutely here for sex scenes as long as they're part of the larger context of a story. Same goes for violence. I prefer a hopeful or happy ending but if you want to tug on my heartstrings getting there, I'm okay with that too!

Things that aren't my jam in a Yuletide fic: Incest, rape, infidelity, heavy focus on suicidal ideation (especially if it's not present in canon), non-canon character death, romantic relationships with big age or power imbalances (ie: boss/employee, teacher/student, a/b/o), cancer, the gay-for-you trope. I actually love alternate-setting AU's, but the canons that I've requested have such tiny fandoms that I'd prefer to read straight-up canon fic for them.

In other places on the internet, I'm [tumblr.com profile] wakeupnew and [archiveofourown.org profile] wakeupnew.

30歳まで童貞だと魔法使いになれるらしい | Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?! (TV)
Kurosawa Yuichi, Adachi Kiyoshi
Optional details: This show, my god. So kind and gentle and funny and romantic! I would love to read about what happens after the series ends. Commuting or working on projects together, going on dates, cooking together? Navigating meeting families?? I LOVE IT ALL. I just love these two and would love to read about them navigating their new relationship, making their lives fit together, and finding their way!

One of the things I appreciated the most about this show (among many, many others) is that it didn't end with the get-together. So much romance media calls it a day at the first kiss or the agreement that people are going to be a couple now, when my personal favorite part is what comes next! Basically any time you have a piece of media where two kind characters take care of each other, and take the time to learn about things that are important to each other, and tenderly watch each other sleep, that's going to be my kryptonite, bye!!

I love how deeply kind Cherry Magic is as a show, and how kind the characters are to each other. Adachi's character progression is one of the most viscerally satisfying I've ever seen in any media, as we watch him come out of his shell and be brave. I love that it's a romance and it's deeply romantic but it's not just about romance -- that Adachi slowly opens up and makes new friendships and starts trying new scary things too, and that Kurosawa is so supportive all the way. I love that Adachi realizes in the end that, as afraid as he was that he wouldn't be enough without it, he doesn't need the magic. And I love that he starts dreaming big after spending his entire life not wanting to have goals or try for things in case he failed.

I'm very into settling-into-new-relationship stories, so post-canon fic would be fantastic if you're inclined! I love how much Kurosawa and Adachi care about each other and want what's best for each other. We obviously see a lot of Adachi's perspective in the show so I'd enjoy seeing more of Kurosawa too -- I love that he always looks so cool on the outside but on the inside is a massive starry-eyed romantic who's obsessing over Adachi's bedhead and cute moles, with his own anxieties. His drive to always be the best possible version of himself and his worry that that won't be enough, that he won't be enough, is heartbreaking. I love that Adachi makes it very clear to him that he doesn't want or expect him to be Perfect Kurosawa all the time, and I'd enjoy any exploration of that -- Kurosawa clearly takes that in (and is moved by it!) and believes him, but that must be a difficult lifelong habit to break.

I'd love to read about Adachi taking care of Kurosawa or doing something for Kurosawa, or Kurosawa just in general internalizing that he gets to be fully himself with Adachi and he doesn't always have to fix things or have all the answers. I'd enjoy anything about their daily lives, about their interactions with families and friends, their careers, eventually moving in together? What happens after we leave them on the rooftop? I'm game for anything!

The whole cast of this show is the best. I have a particularly soft place in my heart for meticulous, shrewd, aromantic(!!!) Fujisaki, but I also love the comedic stylings of Tsuge and Tsuge/Minato, I would die for Udon, and I enjoy Rokkaku, Urabe-san, and all the coworkers. I love the workplace setting and the little moments that Adachi and Kurosawa have at work after they get together, sly smiles or little winks. This whole show just makes me so happy!

Galaxy Quest
Laliari
Optional details: I rewatched the movie recently -- a staple of my childhood -- and realized just how few lines Laliari actually had and how badly I wanted to know more about her. She makes a massive decision to leave behind everything she's ever known and move to Earth with Fred. What drove that, and how does that go? I would love to see her learning about things on Earth -- working on the new Galaxy Quest show, making a home with Fred (or a place of her own if they don't move in together right away), making friends, and balancing pretending to be a human in front of others with also being herself and with getting to stop hiding when she's alone or with trusted friends and family.

How do you hold onto your culture when you're literally the only member of your alien race on an entire planet? What are Laliari's hopes and dreams, and how are they impacted by her new life? There's so much to dig into here and I'd love to hear about any of it! Also like if you want to embrace the tentacles and the alien-ness of it all, I'm here for it.

This movie is such a classic! I was so surprised when I rewatched it and I realized just how few actual words come out of Laliari's mouth -- maybe it was my repressed-baby-wlw mind at work but she was the character who stuck with me the most as a kid. We hear tantalizingly little about the Thermian people and their homeworld, other than that they're peaceful scientists being hounded by Sarris and their world is gone. I'd love to learn more about them! Laliari leaving her people, her entire culture, is such a massive decision, especially to go with a stranger she just met. What drove that for her?

I'm very curious about really anything you'd like to explore -- her backstory, the decision to leave the Protector, and her future on Earth and how she settles in and reacts to learning an entire new world and culture. How does reality differ from all the TV shows she's watched over the years? What kinds of things that we take for granted every day as humans would inspire wonder in or upset a Thermian? I'm Fandom Old and period-accurate details about the early 2000s would crack me up.

I'd enjoy shippy stuff too, for the record! I love both Laliari and Fred (his too-stoned-to-function vibe, combined with the extreme stress when someone is finally really counting on him, is both hilarious and deeply relatable) and would love to see more of their relationship and the two of them growing together! I just want to focus on Laliari, so that's why she's the only character I requested. But I love the whole cast of the movie -- the Thermians and all of the actors, especially Gwen and Fred -- and would enjoy anyone you want to include (or none of them, too!).

How to Be a Werewolf - webcomic
Vincent Dysangco Walters; Elias Ross
Optional details: I was lucky enough to receive an amazing Malaya-and-Vincent gift two years ago, so I'm switching it up and hoping for MORE FICS in this tiny fandom! Watching Vincent and Elias circle around each other as Eli flails over Vincent and Vincent slowly starts to realize he might be having Feelings, has been such a joy. Theirs has been the slow-burniest of relationships and if you wanted to do your take on the inevitable eventual get-together, that could be fun! I also really dig their relationship the way that it is, if you wanted to do some slice-of-life stuff set in the current comic timeline; I've been delighted by them bringing each other food and talking about queerness over baseball and making each other blush and Eli walking Vincent to class.

Man, Chapter 9 was A Lot, with Eli collapsing and Vincent cradling him and keeping him safe (which was, in turn, a lovely turnabout from Eli doing the same for Vincent after he got kidnapped and clawed earlier in the comic), and then so-sleepy-he's-basically-drunk Eli telling Vincent how he feels and Vincent's soft face as he pets asleep-Eli's hair. A LOT. You know, you were there! Honestly I don't have a ton of specific prompts for this request; I would be so delighted with any fic about the two of them! Eli working in the cafe and making excuses to flirt with Vincent while Vince does homework and Malaya laughs at them? Something set farther down the line -- Eli figuring his life out? Does he enroll at the university and join the baseball team? Vincent and Eli going on an actualfax date, in which Eli does not accidentally invite along a third party? Vincent dealing with some of the fallout (which I think the comic has hinted at, with Joy's comment about Vincent not liking to be alone) of being kidnapped and almost dying? Eli introducing Vincent to his massive werewolf family??

Vincent's flat faces are fucking hilarious; some of his reaction panels have made me legitimately shout with laughter. I love that while he can be stoic, quiet, and a little grumpy, he also doesn't hesitate to tell his sister he loves her and he makes amazing deadpan puns. I tend to read him as demiromantic and pansexual, mostly based on this page, though he definitely doesn't know either of those words at this point in the narrative. And Eli! He's such a puppy of a person -- I love how well-intentioned and kind, if sometimes foolhardy and foolish, he is, and that while he can be clueless as heck, he tries SO HARD to get things right.

Added info on other characters in case it's helpful: I LOVE Vincent's sibling relationship with Malaya and Eli's friendship with her, and the Dysangco Walters parents are lovely; best fam. I love/ship the heck out of MarMar. Charlene is marvelous. I'm not super invested in Connie's crew of werewolves, though Ginger's integration with our crew has been fun, but otherwise, I love everyone and the world is your oyster. I know this is a weekly-updating canon and just for the record, I'm not tied to canon here -- if you want to write stuff that's set in the future or that may be contradicted by the comic, go for it; I'm not a stickler for canon like that!

NoPixel RP
Benji Ramos; Ash Ketchup
Optional details: These nightmare trolls - I love them. I enjoy the characters both separately and together, so I would be equally happy with a fic about one of them (that features a cameo or two from the other) as I would with ship fic. I just think they're both so funny/charming and also have really interesting depths to them! I know that the nature of this fandom can be a little blurred, so just to be 100% clear, I would like fic about the fictional characters, not RPF about streamers. Also this is the Definition of an ongoing canon, thanks to hours of new canon streaming every day, so please know I'm aware that things in Los Santos can change on a dime and I'm completely fine with it if something happens that conflicts with what you're writing!

Listen, they just really appreciate each other, you know? I think their game of "I love you" chicken is hilarious and I deeply enjoy their trollery. On paper putting these two characters together may seem unexpected, but I've gotten a huge kick out of their dynamic, and I think they're also pretty similar in some ways that I didn't anticipate when they first got together -- especially how loyal they are and how aggressively they both try to put other people before themselves, though they go about it in very different ways.

I appreciate how devoted these two characters are to each other (even if they express it in non-standard ways) and to who they consider their people, and how deeply supportive they both are at the end of the day. They're both so ridiculously quick-witted and funny and profane; watching their adventures is a roller coaster and I love it. Some quick ideas of stuff I'd enjoy reading about: doing crime, bullying their friends or scammazing people together, A Day in the Life in Los Santos, what in the world their home life looks like, your take on the Uwu Cafe opening, Benji finally gets a dog??

There are a lot of interesting tension points that I'd be down to hear more about too, both internal and external -- their conflicting feelings about marriage, Ash sometimes expecting Benji to fix things when she doesn't even know what she wants herself, the ongoing issue that is 'how do u solve a problem like CG,' and now the situation with the Vagos. Both Ash and Benji can be pretty toxic as characters sometimes, both separately and to each other/in the relationship, and while I'm totally fine with depicting or acknowledging that, I prefer stories that end on a hopeful or happy note. So if you explore internal tension and they argue in a serious way, I would love a resolution by the end (the more light-hearted day-to-day trolling each other and squabbling just cracks me up). And if you want to explore external tension with CG or the Vagos (I was riveted by Ash's experience in that first CG war and her PTSD that followed, and now by the recent Vagos implosion), I'm absolutely here for that.

This is by far my most unexpected fandom/general life experience of the year. I got really sucked into NoPixel back in the spring and the addiction has not let up its iron grip on my life. Benji is my favorite and I watch a lot of Los Santos through Ash's POV but I love all of the city's assorted batshittery and would enjoy touching on any of it! I especially love both Benji and Ash's relationships with KJ and Pepe and Ash's friendship with Sherry. I've been really digging the whole little family that the crew is building in the post-Vagos era. I love all the Uwu boys and I love Benji and Ash's weird adult son adoptions, though I have a strong suspicion Carlitos is gonna break my heart. Reggie, Selena/Marty, Cookie-Jack, Cece, and 4T are some more favorites, though honestly if I start listing NP characters I love we'll be here all day. My one serious request is please do not include Bodhi.

Like I mentioned in my request, this is the most continuing-canon of all continuing canons -- Benji left the Vagos and Chino died (o7) in the time it took me to write this letter, for instance -- so if you start writing something and then storylines or characters take sharp left turns or situations change, don't worry about it!

Sins of the Cities series by KJ Charles
Justin Lazarus; Susan "Sukey" Lazarus; Emma
Optional details: This little grifter fam makes my heart sing! I love how fiercely they love each other and that they built a family all their own. I'd love a story set at any point in time, whether the girls are kids, teens, or adults. I didn't tag Nathaniel but would also enjoy his involvement if you want to include him; Justin, Sukey, and Emma were just my top priorities!

God, I've read An Unnatural Vice so many times and Gilded Cage is rapidly climbing the list as well. I love Justin's sharp sneakiness and coming at everything sideways, and how his ruthlessness (Templeton describes the poker face that Susan learned from Justin as reptilian, in Gilded Cage, which is so very good) and prickliness juxtaposes with how deeply and genuinely he loves the girls. Even if he doesn't always know the best way to take care of or support them (I appreciated that it was made clear in Gilded Cage that he didn't always succeed), he tries so hard for them; that Gilded Cage conversation where Susan says she hasn't needed to stand alone since she was eight years old because she's had Justin was A LOT.

Justin and Susan are delightfully meticulous and snarky and sly and overwhelmingly competent, and I love that they can be vicious and angry and hold grudges and won't hesitate to go low if necessary. They're both so fiercely loyal to the people they love and so funny -- Susan is delightfully dry and Justin is such a shit. I also really appreciate that they're both their own characters, for all their similarities; I loved Susan feeling like it was time to strike out on her own in Gilded Cage. I feel like we don't get as strong of a sense of Emma as a character, so I'd enjoy learning more about her! She's clearly deeply loyal and thoughtful, and I love how protective she is of Sukey (giving Sukey's landlady a colorful piece of her mind!).

There are so many possibilities for ideas that I'd love! Justin first meeting the girls or training them up as his helpers, Sukey terrorizing boarding schools or learning with Miss Rawling, Justin teaching/training Sukey (either as a clairvoyant's helper or as a detective), Susan first joining Braglewicz & Lazarus, everybody playing with Emma's kids, the family rallying around Emma and getting rid of her first husband or supporting Susan after Cara's death or Justin during one of his depressive spells or Susan founding her own agency after Gilded Cage... Anything! If casefic is more your speed, Mark says that being an enquiry agent is mostly about finding lost dogs and lost letters; Susan and Justin working a case that isn't fog, bigamy, torture, and murder could be fun!

Like I mentioned in my prompt, I also enjoy Nathaniel and if you want to explore how he became part of the family too and became a guvnor to Sukey and Emma, I would be here for that as well! If it's helpful to know my feelings on other characters: I love everyone, and I really enjoy Justin, Mark, and Susan's detective partnership. I ship everybody with their canon partners, including Justin/Nathaniel, Susan/Cara, Susan/James, Pen/Mark, Clem/Rowley, Alec/Jerry, Stan/Christiana, and Greta/Tim. Basically for anyone you might like to include, there's no losing here!

Space Sweepers
Captain Jang; Bubs; Tiger Park; Kim Tae-ho
Optional details: Honestly all I want is found! family!! in space!!!!! I was only able to ask for four characters so I stuck with the original crew, but I would also love post-movie fic about the four of them raising Kang Kot-nim. Please bear in mind that Bubs is a woman and use she/her pronouns for her.

This movie!!!!! I was ragingly excited from the moment I saw the first space opera trailer starring Song Joong-ki and Kim Tae-ri and the movie delivered in every way possible -- the action, the adventure, the scifi, the humor, the pathos, the found family! I loved the world-building and all the details of this future universe and especially Victory, and I loved the entire crew.

I'd really enjoy post-movie fic about the crew finally accepting that they're a weird little family and figuring out how to raise a child together -- Kang Kot-nim settling in on the ship permanently, her and Kim Tae-ho coming to terms with grief (or scamming people together!), Tiger Park drawing with her, Bubs getting her surgeries or doing hair and makeup again with Kot-nim, Captain Jang continuing to Take No Prisoners? People making a child's lunches or helping with homework or teaching the essentials of ship maintenance or space-gun safety, or interacting with other children/other children's families? Kot-nim joining on a run as the Victory goes after a lucrative hunk of space junk? I'm game!

I also love the four of them independent of Kang Kot-nim so if you want to explore their adventures before the events of the movie, I would dig that too! I love a good space-cantina bar fight, if you're so inclined, or some shenanigans while squabbling over money or trying to scrape together enough to upgrade the engine on some backwater satellite or pulling the rug out from under their competitor scrappers. Or how did they all meet each other and first decide to work together? I love all of these characters (and the multinational anti-capitalist scifi setting), tho I am but a weak lesbian and have a particular soft spot for the brilliant, swaggering Captain Jang.
