wakeupnew: Joshua Chamberlain staring into the distance, with caption "brains are sexy" ([glee] put my face on)

gonna give all my secrets away

Realization of the day, which I don't think is much of a spoiler but does include a mention of a song that'll be in Glee's Valentine's Day episode, so I'll put it behind a cut. I'm pretty sure that Glee has actually used an a cappella cover of "When I Get You Alone" as incidental background music; the little "buh buh buh!" voices that you used to hear more in season 1 than we have in season 2.

This realization brought to you by the fact that I bought the Beelzebubs' cover of "When I Get You Alone" on iTunes and (A) it is so fucking catchy, but more importantly (B) it was insanely familiar, which is when I realized that they've used it on the show. HAHAHA JUST KIDDING, "When I Get You Alone" actually samples "A Fifth of Beethoven" by Water Murphy and the Big Apple Band, which is what Glee used a cappella covers of for incidental music. But still! Listening to the a cappella version of "When I Get You Alone" is kind of weird. It makes me feel like comedically-dramatic/ominous things should be happening to Will Schuester.

ANYWAY I like the a cappella version of "When I Get You Alone" much better than the original! I actually kind of love it. A lot. And may or may not have been listening to it on repeat for the last three hours. I am so psyched to see this on the show now.

And a question: where did the last name for Blaine that fandom seems to have settled on come from? I'm assuming there was an interview/reveal of some kind during my December [livejournal.com profile] yuletide-coma, because I've somehow totally missed this.

I'm having one of those weeks where my mind is flying in about 16 directions at once with things I want to do and want to work on, but all I have the energy for is stretching out on the floor in front of the fire with my computer and skimming through Tumblr or refreshing my f-list and hoping for good fic to show up. I have apparently been here for so long that the cat thinks I'm a permanent fixture. He's currently curled up on the backs of my legs. This is not a cat that welcomes cuddles or human attention. I think he thinks I'm part of the floor.

I really, really need to sleep more.

I know I moan about the show a lot, but it actually does make me happy; I mean, I do stick with it for reasons other than having something to complain about. I've had plenty of moments where I've laughed or clapped my hands with delight, but in order to narrow down the nominees, I'm going to take this as a "had warm and fuzzy feelings and got overwhelmingly happy without any underlying sadness/bittersweetness" sort of a question. That knocks out most of the Hummel scenes and "Just the Way You Are" (which make me happy but in the way where I'm a sobbing wreck), and takes us down to: Mr. Schuester listening to the kids over the phone while they performed at season 1 sectionals; the entire football team busting out "Single Ladies" on the gridiron after Puck's stellar "your mom" insult; everything about "Bad Romance"; and Kurt and Rachel's conversation at his locker followed by their duet.

And, frankly, this one was pretty easy.

A scene/moment that made you happy: "Get Happy/Happy Days Are Here Again" duet

I've always thought that Kurt and Rachel are two sides of the same ridiculous coin, and have always wanted them to have a maybe-slightly-prickly-but-genuine friendship. Rachel reaching out and telling Kurt that she knows he's lonely but he isn't alone, and offering to sing the most perfect song ever, seriously, together, just -- so happy. So happy. Holding hands! Smiling! Singing! The foot pop! It was an unbearably kind gesture from Rachel, and they just lit up the screen.

Two illustrative videos! The one on the left is just the Glee version; the one on the right is the Judy Garland/Barbra Streisand original.

"Rachel and I have reached détente," Kurt says.

"I don't know what that means," Finn says, a little blank but mostly impatient.

He sighs sharply, and immediately regrets it. The front hallway of the new house still smells strongly of paint fumes. "We made a truce and she's sad, Finn; that's what it means."

"Well--" Finn looks conflicted; like he still has great misgivings about this, but he feels bad about Rachel being a sad clown all the time. "Do you really have to hang out with her? I mean--" He lowers his voice, like Rachel is somehow not aware of this fact and is somehow going to hear him from the driveway, "you never even liked her when you were at McKinley."

"She wears sweaters with schnauzers on them and her speaking voice makes it feel like she's using a cheese grater on her listeners' ears," (Finn is frowning now), "but she's been surprisingly kind to me lately and the least I can do is return the favor." Finn opens his mouth, but Kurt doesn't want to hear it. "I'm not taking sides. We won't even be discussing you. I'm fixing her tragic nails while we watch musicals."

"...Oh," says Finn, looking appropriately chastened.

"I won't bring her to the house; she's only here because I thought you wanted the Navigator tonight, and she has promised to stay inside her car."

"Oh," Finn says again, heavier this time; guilty, Kurt thinks, both about Rachel's Jetta currently idling in the driveway and about confronting Kurt when Kurt was actually trying to be accommodating. "I mean. She could come inside."

"Considering that you two broke up and yet still have to be together all the time for glee, I think that keeping the house as a Rachel-free zone during winter break is a fair and reasonable compromise," Kurt says, not without sympathy. He grabs his bag off the side table and slings it over his shoulder, winding an artfully-selected scarf around his neck. He raises his voice and calls, "I'll be back by 10."

From the kitchen, Carole shouts back something that he can't quite make out, but sounds cheerful.

"Don't let my dad lift any furniture," Kurt instructs Finn, who finally smiles and promises, "You got it, dude."

When he steps outside and is being buffeted by a very icy wind on the front steps, Kurt turns around. "Finn?" Finn stops with the door half-closed, looking over at him curiously. "If I had to choose a side, you do realize where I would be all but forced to stand, right?" Kurt says it warmly enough that Finn really ought to get it, and, to Finn's credit, he slowly smiles a very little bit.

"Yeah," he says. "Thanks, Kurt."

"No lifting!" Kurt tosses blithely over his shoulder as he picks his way through the snow to Rachel's car. When he opens the door, he's blasted with heat and the soundtrack to Funny Girl.

"I've come up with an excellent list of classic musicals for our marathon," Rachel says with no preamble. She's wearing a red pea coat and white beret; Kurt can't see what she has on under the coat, but as he settles into the passenger seat and pulls the door shut, he's willing to bet there isn't an animal to be found on whatever sweater she has chosen. Rachel is learning. "It seemed wisest to view them chronologically, but I'm willing to discuss alternate orders."

"...Fine," Kurt says, after an internal battle that results in him not telling Rachel that they're going to expand her tastes because because when it comes to Broadway, she is stuck in 1964. He clicks his seatbelt into place.

Rachel is staring at him, the car in reverse but her foot still on the brake. "You're patronizing me!" she says suddenly, outraged.

"No, I'm not," Kurt protests.

"Kurt," says Rachel, "my heart may be broken forever, but that doesn't mean that you need to censor yourself." She glances away, then back again. "Though I'm touched that you would do that for m--"

"Fine," Kurt retorts, interrupting before this can turn into a Lifetime moment. "Then we're starting with this," he plucks the original Broadway cast DVD of Into the Woods out of his bag and holds it up, "because your obsession with Funny Girl is sad bordering on frightening and we're going to broaden your horizons."

"I've seen Into the Woods, you know," Rachel says, sounding a little peevish but very Rachel, as she turns around in her seat and backs the Jetta out of the driveway. "Bernadette Peters is a genius."

"Good. But still: no Funny Girl," Kurt says firmly.

"B--"

"No Streisand." To underscore his point, Kurt reaches over and mutes the car's stereo system.

"You're very bossy today," says Rachel, cross, the still only half-familiar houses on the street flashing past. "And every day."

"I'm only doing what's best for you, Rachel," Kurt says loftily.

Rachel rolls her eyes, but then she shakes her head and laughs, bright and girlish, and grabs the hand that he's been resting on his knee. "It's really good to see you, Kurt."

"Don't get used to it," warns Kurt, but he's smiling genuinely. "It's only for two weeks." He squeezes and she squeezes back; her hand is warm and small in his, but her grip is strong.

"Then we have a lot of productions to watch today," she says, laughing again, and she puts her hands back at 10 and 2 on the wheel.

"I have a cam download of a dubiously legal nature of a Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark preview," Kurt admits after several seconds, and Rachel gasps and says, "You do not."

"Rachel! Eyes on the road!"

A very vital question: is there a way to do custom comments pages on Dreamwidth? I like reading things in the Porn Battle, but much to my dismay, it has shifted over to Dreamwidth. I don't mind DW, but I hate its comment pages. I really, really just want a blank white one like the LJ default. Is there a way to get that? GOT IT; I'M AN IDIOT.
