Fandom is so silly sometimes. Maybe it's just me, but when an author says "this isn't my best work" or "un-beta'd" or "this is my very first [fandom] fic" right in the header, I'm like, okay, peace out! I mean, I don't generally use betas (except for Yuletide and the rare bigger project), either, but I don't announce that in the blurb that goes before the fic-post. I feel like the little header is basically the place where you sell your fic and convince me to read it, and "I've written better than this; PLEASE REVIEW!" isn't terribly convincing. Either that or I have weird standards. Which -- I guess I do have some standards. If the link-post isn't formatted correctly, there are spelling/grammar mistakes, it contains any of the things I mentioned above, the description looks overwrought and OOC, or it's not finished, I don't usually go read the fic. Those are the breaks of being in a bigger fandom, I guess, and particularly one with serious appeal to youngsters; I never really noticed as much of this kind of stuff -- LJ-cut fails, entire stories formatted into one giant paragraph of text, people having to be coached through how to post something, disclaimers like "spoilers for future song choice" and then listing the song right there in the spoiler disclaimer (that one made me laugh) -- in my smaller fandoms.

But there are actual new things to read every day, unlike in my smaller fandoms, so I can live with having to do a lot of filtering to find the good stuff!

In other fandom news, one of the actors from Huge who I really, really loved is going to be on Glee. YESSSSS. He and Ashley Fink (Lauren) can have a Huge reunion! I am still so sad about Huge; it had a terrible title and even worse marketing, but it was such a fabulous show.

In other other fandom news: HAHAHAHA THE SONGS FOR THE VALENTINE'S DAY EPISODE WERE RELEASED AND THEY ARE THE GREATEST OH MY GOD. I will also discuss the other couple-y spoilers that got leaked today.

I am fully aware that there is a strong chance that the execution of this will make me want to kill things; for now, I am stuck on "Puck would" and also HAHAHA HE IS SINGING TO LAUREN YESSSSS.

Also I am very excited for Tina to sing "My Funny Valentine," too, and that other stuff but YES YES YES YES SHOW CHOIR IS STUPID, BITCHES.

And the other spoilers: Sam and Quinn are breaking up because they were "too perfect" and Ryan Murphy "got bored." Those are direct quotes from the man himself, and I suddenly have an even greater understanding of how his shows are SO WHACKED OUT. The guy just gets bored and then off-handedly does shit to entertain himself. Not only are Sam and Quinn breaking up, but, as has been long rumored, Quinn/Finn and Sam/Santana are going to get a little something something going. Ridiculous, show. Ridiculous. Not everyone! has to be paired up! at all times! No seriously!

While I was writing this post, word got out about this week's cover of Entertainment Weekly.



Fandom is losing its collective shit right now, and it is one of the funniest things I have ever seen. I mean, I am thoroughly pleased by this, but I have to say, BY FAR the most entertaining part has been watching the freak outs. I've seriously just been refreshing a couple community posts all night and laughing uncontrollably. I look forward to the internet exploding again when the issue comes out on Friday.

This is so, so, so difficult. The show makes me so mad, so often. But if we're talking specific scenes/moments, then there are a couple of main contenders for this prized crown. The gross pity kiss that Will laid on Beiste; that part in "Funk" where Will seduced Sue; "I really wanna do it, but they're just not cool with me dressing up like a tranny"; the ReWalk. Each of them is so special in its own way! Schuester's condescension/cruelty and the fact that two whip-smart tough women both inexplicably fall for it! It was unacceptable for a man to wear Tim Curry's fishnets, for Amber Riley to do the number in drag as a man, or for the word "transsexual" to be sung, and yet the slur "tranny" was a hilarious joke! The ReWalk: taking the show's weird history with disability (casting an actor-who-can-walk as a paraplegic! casting a paraplegic actor to play a quadriplegic character and promptly using him as a one-off stunt prop who we never hear of again! as much as I adore her, Becky only getting screentime as a prop for Sue! constantly treating Artie like he is not a fully realized character unless he can walk!) and encapsulating it into one horrible moment!

Yeah, okay, I have a winner.

All of these made me very, very angry, but only one made me hit RAGE BLACKOUT levels. You can see it in the recap post that I wrote after the Christmas episode aired. I barely wrote anything about it because I didn't even know what to say.

The scene/moment that pissed you off the most: Artie walks as a Christmas miracle

It was cheap, it was not earned, it drove home the constant pounding mantra that Artie does not get a subplot unless it is ALL ABOUT him being in a wheelchair and what he can't do (instead of being about the fact that he is a teenager, with other interests and things going on in his life, who happens to be in a wheelchair), and it was yet another glaring reminder that I desperately want new blood on the writing team.

I normally do animated gifs and drabbles for these meme questions, but hell no, I am not touching this one. I know when angry is too angry! And I just don't think there's anything I could write in a drabble that would make this in any way more palatable or acceptable to me.

THE VALENTINE SONG CHOICES. I AM SO HAPPY. JENNA GETS AN AMAZING SOLO AND I HOPE WE GET TO SEE THAT MIKE CHANG HAS LOW SELF-ESTEEM OR SOMETHING (Fandom and anyone ever, who has seen his abs: "WHAT?") that would actually be pretty interesting... but I doubt the show will go there since they don't care about Mike/Tina. Sigh.

Oh man, I brought it up in one of my fics - but Puck has been with every single girl in Glee except Tina. I love Puck/Lauren; but I hope this bet brought up in the future because I think Tina's the only girl in Glee who would give him an epic smackdown of "uh, not interested!"

I'm all in all pretty happy with these new songs that we didn't already know about! I mean, there is the definite chance that "Fat Bottomed Girl" is going to be FULL OF SO MUCH FAIL, but I am choosing to be on the PUCK IS SINGING TO LAUREN YESSSSS bandwagon right now! And I am SO SO SO EXCITED FOR "FUNNY VALENTINE." I love the actress's voice and am always sad she doesn't get to sing more and I LOVE THAT SONG AND THAT SHE'S UNDOUBTEDLY SINGING IT TO MIKE and basically this just confirms all my mental canon of Mike being kind of quirky.

That is my bet as well, and I still don't know whether I'd rather see it never mentioned again or see it dealt with.

Jenna's voice is so underutilized on the show; I think it's absolutely criminal. (I am so shamelessly biased. Her voice is what I would most sound like of everyone in the cast if I had a lot more talent and actually had the balls to take voice lessons.)

That is why I literally shrieked with laughter when I first read that line of the spoiler post with the songs. Because he WOULD! He would. I am not concerned about him making me mad with it (because Puck is meant to be a jackass and that's telegraphed very clearly, so I never take his more offensive lines/behavior very seriously); I'm giving the side-eye a bit to the writers and how they're going to handle it, and what they're going to have Lauren's response be. But that's pessimistic, and I am all about the sunshine and the sparkles tonight!

I totally agree, and without any bias, so you're not alone here! Her voice is so lovely and versatile; I'm beyond pumped that she finally gets a solo to call her own.

Any of those psuedo-self deprecating (because they feel fake) or super young-sounding and insecure (admittedly, sometimes they feel like this too) is pretty much an automatic 'do not read' for me.

OMG. I had the most horrendous morning at work, and then I found these pictures. CUTEST EVER Y/Y?? I was waiting for them to have a photoshoot together and this did not disappoint. If anyone tries to deny that Blaine is the boyfriend now, I will absolutely laugh in their face.

Other spoilers: EEEE that song is so perfect for Tina. And if I had any faith in the show, I would bet that "Fat-Bottomed Girls" would be amazing, but since this is Glee, I worry. But I would love for it to be amazing, because that pairing has so much potential!

Re: boredom: if a bunch of freshman theatre kids from my high school of the arts decided to pool all their money together and start a show, it would be something like a Ryan Murphy program. "I'm bored. Let's do something that's TOTALLY EDGY. ALSO, SPARKLES."

I hear you on the reading-fanfic thing.

I am SUPER PICKY about what I read these days, mostly because yeah ... there's just way more crap than there is quality. These days I've actually just stuck to reading through AO3, or through recommendations from people I know. Those crazy comment-a-thons mostly generate decent quality fic too.

But yup. If I see any of those things, they kind of get mentally checked off my internal turn-offs list. I generally don't leave notes - like at all - if I write fic (except a disclaimer, and a note about betas if I've used any). But then, I haven't written actual fic outside of Yuletide for years.

OH ALSO: OMG THOSE PICS. SO. CUTE. :D

Yeah, I try to write minimal notes as well; I feel like extensive notes take away from the writing in the actual story. I've gotten picky, too! For a while, I was reading every single fic posted at kurt_blaine, but I had to quit; it just wasn't worth it, haha.

The full versions are even more ridiculous. My personal favorite is the ukelele one; you can't see it in the size that I posted, but Kurt is sitting between Blaine's legs as he stared up at him adoringly. It's sickeningly cute!

I am so with you about fanfic headers. I do sometimes click on things like that, but only if I'm feeling very bored or very fic-desperate. Most of the time, I go "...oh, author" and scroll right on past.

Well, unless it's a crack-fic. Those often have a "HAHAHA UNBETAED RIDICULOUSNESS" sort of disclaimer, and whether I click or not depends on the author and the premise and the tone and stuff.
