wakeupnew: Joshua Chamberlain staring into the distance, with caption "brains are sexy" ([hellboy] LOL!)
Fandom is so silly sometimes. Maybe it's just me, but when an author says "this isn't my best work" or "un-beta'd" or "this is my very first [fandom] fic" right in the header, I'm like, okay, peace out! I mean, I don't generally use betas (except for Yuletide and the rare bigger project), either, but I don't announce that in the blurb that goes before the fic-post. I feel like the little header is basically the place where you sell your fic and convince me to read it, and "I've written better than this; PLEASE REVIEW!" isn't terribly convincing. Either that or I have weird standards. Which -- I guess I do have some standards. If the link-post isn't formatted correctly, there are spelling/grammar mistakes, it contains any of the things I mentioned above, the description looks overwrought and OOC, or it's not finished, I don't usually go read the fic. Those are the breaks of being in a bigger fandom, I guess, and particularly one with serious appeal to youngsters; I never really noticed as much of this kind of stuff -- LJ-cut fails, entire stories formatted into one giant paragraph of text, people having to be coached through how to post something, disclaimers like "spoilers for future song choice" and then listing the song right there in the spoiler disclaimer (that one made me laugh) -- in my smaller fandoms.

But there are actual new things to read every day, unlike in my smaller fandoms, so I can live with having to do a lot of filtering to find the good stuff!

In other fandom news, one of the actors from Huge who I really, really loved is going to be on Glee. YESSSSS. He and Ashley Fink (Lauren) can have a Huge reunion! I am still so sad about Huge; it had a terrible title and even worse marketing, but it was such a fabulous show.

In other other fandom news: HAHAHAHA THE SONGS FOR THE VALENTINE'S DAY EPISODE WERE RELEASED AND THEY ARE THE GREATEST OH MY GOD. I will also discuss the other couple-y spoilers that got leaked today. HOWLING )

While I was writing this post, word got out about this week's cover of Entertainment Weekly.

Fandom is losing its collective shit right now, and it is one of the funniest things I have ever seen. I mean, I am thoroughly pleased by this, but I have to say, BY FAR the most entertaining part has been watching the freak outs. I've seriously just been refreshing a couple community posts all night and laughing uncontrollably. I look forward to the internet exploding again when the issue comes out on Friday.

Two more pictures behind the cut; one of them features a vaguely spoilery quote from Chris Colfer )

And finally, today's Glee meme question. Glee meme day 13 -- A scene/moment that pissed you off )
wakeupnew: Joshua Chamberlain staring into the distance, with caption "brains are sexy" ([mentalist] today is a good day)
One of the performances from Sectionals on Glee already leaked (web address contains a song spoiler), and I just need to say: Rachel Barbra Berry, I love you and everything absurd that you stand for.

Why is it not 5:00 yet? It is the day before Thanksgiving; everyone is leaving, including the receptionist (she has a massage to get to, she informed me). And yet I am still here. This weekend: vegan baking extravaganza + Harry Potter. FINALLY.

Glee meme day 7: your favorite Finn-Kurt moment )
wakeupnew: Kurt with the football helmet on and his arms over his head, viewed from behind, doing the Single Ladies dance ([glee] single ladies)
I swear to God the Glee posts are going to get less constant once we get past tomorrow's episode; it's just that tomorrow's is the one I've been waiting for ever since I first heard somebody was cast (so -- for several months now?), and the basically month-long wait with no new episodes (the Rocky Horror episode had no plot; it doesn't count) has driven me kind of bananas. Once we see tomorrow's episode, I am going to stop wigging. Probably. Maybe.

Anyway, in the meantime, this meme seemed appropriate! It says "30 days" but it's probably going to take me longer, because I am a slow creature by nature.

30 days of Glee, thing! All of my responses will be spoiler-free safe zones. )

I have been quietly committing atrocities fic on the Glee anonymemes. They are ridiculous fics. Somebody asked for Kurt being sick and Finn being helpful, so I did that, and then somebody else asked for young!Kurt-and-Burt based off of that awesome blog that's been making the rounds, about a mother supporting her young son who wanted to be Daphne from Scooby Doo for Halloween. I sort of debated that one and whether it would be weird, then decided that if I was willing to ask for RPF for Yuletide, it was kind of silly to be freaked about writing fic based on the structure of a blog post. So I did that, too. You should definitely read the blog post that I linked, if you haven't seen it yet; I wanted to reach through the internet and hug that mom.

Excerpt from the truly special drunk blog post about the Rocky Horror episode that I am still finishing: "i'd like toe preserve you in a jar in my basement," she says. MERCEDES I WOULD LIKE TO PRESERE YOU IN MY HEART. Bad news: I cannot remember what half of this shit means ("frenching grizzly bears consider living in florida"????) so I'm going to have to rewatch that episode. I was very proud of my coherency levels when I wrote that post two weeks ago, but I am seeing now that the sober was a lie.

I've hit the point of my day where everything feels like ~*floating in dream land*~ so that's nice! I always enjoyed that aspect of pulling all-nighters in college. Also, I have figured out why I am feeling so crappy! (I am an idiot.) There's not much I can do about it, but at least I am no longer sitting here thinking terrible dramatic sleep-deprived thoughts while I Google symptoms. Added bonus: I just called my house and the answering machine picked up after a couple rings, which should, I think, mean that the power is back on! SUCCESS!

HAHAHAHA SO I AM WEIRD.

I mean, you all already know this about me. But I feel better starting this post with that disclaimer.

I talked about that video a few days ago! I enjoyed it! I ... am still enjoying it, because I am still watching it! I don't really know why! I mean, it's adorable and I know exactly why I like it, but I'm not sure why it struck such an intense chord with me. Or why I laugh every. single. time. at 1:26. But I want to talk about it more, so I'm going to here.

(I feel like I have lost it.)

INCISIVE COMMENTARY WITH ILLUSTRATIVE PICTURES )
wakeupnew: Joshua Chamberlain staring into the distance, with caption "brains are sexy" ([mentalist] not so great)
If you'd like one of your characters to jump into bed with one of mine, leave a comment along with a prompt and I will write you a drabble/ficlet.

I listed my characters just a couple days ago; I'd link it again here, but A) I am lazy, and B) I don't like pulling up RP journals on work internet. I am not backlogged with cases, for the first time since arriving back here! The woman who I work with is out of the office! I am running out of things to do! Please give me things to write while I'm on my lunch break. That would be awesome.

You can consider this a drabble post in general, too, if that particular meme doesn't interest you. Give me a character or a pairing and some kind of a prompt, and I will take it from there. I don't always finish these things, but I try, and hey, you never know, maybe you will give me a prompt and I'll wind up writing thirty pages of fic for it ([livejournal.com profile] agonistes, I'm lookin' at you)! Look, I'll even make this post public! My fandoms are a matter of public record by now, I believe, but here's a random assortment of things that I will write for; if you see something missing from the list and want me to write it, can't hurt to ask! If you know I've seen or read something, I'll probably be willing to at least take a crack at writing for it.

Burn Notice, How I Met Your Mother, Leverage, Bones, Hellboy (movies or Hellboy and BPRD comics), Iron Man (movies or comics), Deadpool, Cable and Deadpool, Black Books, iCarly, National Treasure, Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII, Final Fantasy X, The Red Star, M*A*S*H, Firefly, Princess Tutu, Run Fatboy Run, Watchmen, The Office (bearing in mind I never saw the end of the last season), [livejournal.com profile] milliways_bar, Sherlock Holmes, Torchwood (I have not seen series 1, but I've seen Children of Earth and most of series 2), True Blood (I've only seen the first six and a half episodes and read the first book, but I'll give it a shot!), Star Wars: X-Wing, Hot Fuzz, Star Trek (nu!Trek; you can request original series, Next Generation, Voyager, or even Enterprise if you want, but it's been years and I make no guarantees of the greatness of my memory)

I will write crossovers, crack, and basically anything else; I can only write sexy or gross things that are mildly sexy or gross (I am at my desk at work, pls remember. This is a worksafe space, darlings).

I inexplicably have the Next Generation theme stuck in my head. I haven't seen that show since I was 14 and obsessed. What, brain?
wakeupnew: Joshua Chamberlain staring into the distance, with caption "brains are sexy" ([scenery] summertime)
Stolen primarily from [livejournal.com profile] austen:

Pick a pairing from my fandoms, and come with a location and/or situation, and I will write you between 50 and 250 words about the kiss that happened in that context.

I feel like my fandoms are fairly common knowledge, but if you're unsure, check my 'fic' tag or my interests; I'm pretty sure I have most of them listed there. 50 words is short! I like short. I also like having things to write in between reading about the affectation of language and what it means to people's identity. Hrg, philosophy class, please leave me alone.
wakeupnew: two bunnies sitting in a pair of shoes ([misc] bunny shoes)
You find out funny things, when researching for fic-purposes. Like that Egyptian-inspired fashions were highly popular in 1923, because of the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb.

This is especially funny, given that I was writing a ficlet based on The Mummy. [livejournal.com profile] misslucyjane is running a loveathon today, at the post in that link; no strikes, no spam, just good old love! It's simple: you fill a request, you make a request. More people should make requests, so I have things to do around doing my homework.

Or you can request things of me here. I can't promise that they'll all get done, but if it's a fandom that I know, I'll probably at least take a stab at it; whether that means an icon or a full fic or a drabble or just a line or two, I can't be sure. But I just had to email my friend and say that no, I can't go have Easter dinner with her in Connecticut, because there's too much to do here, and I'm exceedingly unhappy about this, so -- distractions is nice.

My fandoms include but are not limited to: [livejournal.com profile] milliways_bar (if I have not seen the original canon but know the character from Milliways, I'll do my best), National Treasure, Star Wars: X-Wing, M*A*S*H, The Red Star, Run Fatboy Run, Black Books, Bones, Firefly, Watchmen, Sherlock Holmes, The Office (American), Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead, Scooby Doo, Final Fantasy VII. I have many, many more, but that's what I can come up with off the top of my head; feel free to request things that aren't on that list, too. I will not write: RPF, bandom, nonconsensual/incredibly iffy sex, probably graphic sex in general. Anything else goes!

(While I'm on the subject, I forgot to note last week's DE ficathon! People [people being [livejournal.com profile] rushin_doll, [livejournal.com profile] minkhollow, and [livejournal.com profile] bodldops] wrote me AWESOME THINGS, and I wrote several ficlets, too. My favorite, though, was for [livejournal.com profile] areyoumymemmy. In which Lilly Kane gets married, again; crossover with Firefly by way of [livejournal.com profile] milliways_bar. Alternate title: In which Lexie makes a sad attempt at Lilly Kane's voice.)

Give me prompts, people, or go to Jenna's loveathon and do it there, if you are inclined to fill a request. Please?

*looks cute*

As the Yuletide reveal has now gone up, I can say:

A) That I completely sucked at guessing who wrote things (I was so sure, in one or two cases, and so wrong), and

B) That I wrote two stories. One was Manny's Birthday, a last second Black Books Treat for [livejournal.com profile] count_nickula that was criminally fun to write, and the other was The Affair of the Dutch Steamship Friesland for [livejournal.com profile] elance, a massive Sherlock Holmes story that I owe everything to my betareaders for. It was incredibly exciting to write; I've been a Sherlock Holmes fangirl since age seven or eight, and it was thrilling and terrifying at once to write something in the fandom, and especially to try to get the tone and Watson's voice right.

(Holy crap, the feedback has been so amazing on both; if anyone who's reading this commented -- thank you, thank you, thank you.)

Plus, right up til I came home, jet-lagged and half-dead, on the seventeenth, my location lent itself to the story. While writing it, I walked the Strand, I read about old-time east London in the Senate House library (which didn't wind up in the story, but still pleased me, as I was living in southeast London), I brushed up on my Holmes while riding the tube, and I went to the Sherlock Holmes Museum on Baker Street. Somewhere on the internet, there are pictures of me sitting in "Holmes and Watson's study," wearing a Watson-esque bowler hat and cracking up like a fiend.

Here's to Yuletide '07 -- a fantastic experience, and I'm for sure doing it again next year. Here is where I run away to figure out who wrote all of my favorite stories, and to thank my authors more personally!
wakeupnew: Joshua Chamberlain staring into the distance, with caption "brains are sexy" ([M*A*S*H] smile)
I went through the entirety of the Yuletide archive and read through every single fandom that I know. DONE. \o/

As before, here are links to the stories that especially resonated with me. Or that made me shriek. Sometimes both at the same time.

18 recs in 14 fandoms, which are: M*A*SH, The Mummy, Neil Gaiman's "A Study in Emerald," Neverwhere, His Dark Materials, Pushing Daisies, RPF - Comic Industry, Shaun of the Dead, Shirley Jackson's We Have Always Lived in the Castle, The Simpsons, Spaced, Stardust, and Superbad.

REC EXPLOSION: THE SEQUEL )
wakeupnew: Joshua Chamberlain staring into the distance, with caption "brains are sexy" ([national treasure] skeptic)
RECS. My system is a simple one: if something made me crack up hysterically, tear up/cry, or grin like an idiot, it gets recced. So far, I've only made it through fandoms starting with N, but I'm moving forward with every passing moment! (You may notice that I haven't actually left comments on these stories yet. This is because the general plan is to get through the archive, set up my recs, and then do a HAPPYMASSIVE reread, leaving glee and comments as I go.)

Of the six Mary Poppins stories written for Yuletide this year? Four were for me. *sniggering cheerfully*

REC EXPLOSION. Containing: Hercule Poirot, Arrested Development, Sherlock Holmes, Black Books, Bones, The Bourne Identity, Bones, Children of Men, Commercials, Homicide: Life on the Streets, Hot Fuzz, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Knocked Up, Mary Poppins, National Treasure )

OH MAN. I somehow wound up with four Yuletide stories written for me!!!

(Also, one of the two that I wrote is still uploaded on the site, but got lost somehow; it's not linked anywhere, and the recipient presumably didn't receive it. D:!!!! I emailed the mods; hopefully it'll get fixed quickly.)

I am desperately clawing for time to read them all before we leave for family things; they are all Mary Poppins Mary/Bert fic, and they are: A Look Back, Where the Air Is Clear, The Best Things Happen When You're Dancing, and What's to Happen All Happened Before.

THEY'RE ALL SO GORGEOUS I DON'T KNOW WHERE TO START.

MERRY CHRISTMAS.

I made these and this post ages ago, but for whatever reason, I never actually posted it.
